Number One SonIn Monfoon Leong's "Number One Son",talks about the life of a young individual named Ming who has to face his fathers death and take on his fathers role as being ahead of the household. Ming's father worked in a restaurant as a dishwasher.Ming worked as a houseboy. Ming felt betrayed by his father's death because his father left him with a burden which was to take care of 6 kids and his mother.Ming's mother didn't call him until the morning because she didn't to wake up his boss. Ming and grandfather Choak went to go see neighbors and business people in order to get money for the funeral.The opinions of Kwon Kim, Mr Chung, and Widow Loo contrast regard to Ming's father because Kwom Kim thought of his father as being a good man and a hard worker.Mr Chung thought of Ming's father as a failure in life and he quoted that he would be a fool to put money towards his fathers death. Widow Loo was a dumpy woman poor, about forty and short. She thought of his father as a man with a little money but a lot of heart. Some bad things about ming being the number one son was, he had to deal with 6 kids in he didn't know any Chinese for example in the story he didn't even know what to say to his mother he just held her. Some good things about him being the number one son was he could make his own choices he didn't have to listen to his mother for example when he went to get the watch back from the lier. This essay shows u the difficulties of certain cultures and what the have to deal with.
